Local Theater Company  is a nonprofit theater company that discovers, develops and produces new American plays. We engage Colorado audiences through innovative performances that spark camaraderie, learning, and contemplation, and provide a resourceful environment for theater artists to take creative risks, and develop new work.

Based in Boulder, Local has distinguished itself as the only Colorado-based theater company that produces world premieres exclusively. Throughout the United States, Local is considered a leader in American theater, a company at the forefront of a movement to create new work that’s reflective of our nation’s varied stories. Local was founded on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These guiding tenets inform the selection of plays, as well as the hiring of creative and production teams. Local believes that an organization should reflect its entire community, and is committed to offering employment opportunities to the diverse group of artists and administrators that comprise the Colorado and national creative communities. Every season, Local produces two main stage world premieres as well as Local Lab, a week-long creative incubator for playwrights that culminates in public presentations of cutting-edge theater. In addition, Local has a thriving education program, LocalWRITES. A standards-based playwriting program offered to emerging bilingual students at Boulder’s Casey Middle School, LocalWRITES increases literacy, fosters self-expression, and promotes self-confidence. As a result of Local’s efforts, the greater body of American drama has expanded to reflect the challenges and triumphs of our nation, its history, and its people.
