Digging Up Dirt is an exhibit featuring the figurative sculptural work of Cindy Britan and contemporary abstract floral artwork by Lorena Fox. This exhibition is designed to explore the development of a deeper appreciation and broader perspective for engaging with the visual arts. We attempt to examine the duality of the visual and the subconscious elements represented in the creation of art; thereby, creating a connection with what lies beneath the surface and what exists above.

The act of digging deeper into the confluence of the dark and the light elements, assists to elevate an expansive understanding of how the many artistic styles and mediums can coexist and compliment each other. The reciprocity of the dark and the light are an essential part of our existence, and are present in artistic creations if you choose to dig deeper. Our goal is to bring together all the artistic elements involved in the creation of art alongside a deeper look into the subconscious aspects of the dark and the light to create a more integrated perspective. In pulling from what lies beneath the surface, and integrating what exists above, we can grow and flourish as artists and as humans.

Lorena Fox

Lorena Fox is a contemporary artist living and working in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado. Her paintings are known for their energetic, textural and dynamic style, often walking the line between abstract and impressionistic. She translates her trained knowledge of color and composition to acrylic painting and loves when a piece comes together in unexpected ways. Her colorful paintings are inspired by the beauty found in nature and experiences pulled from her immersion in it.

Lorena’s process usually involves quick, intuitive strokes. The sessions can be intense and focused, full of raw energy and movement around the studio. She delights in getting a piece to a visual stopping point quickly, similar to wanting to know how a really good book is going to unfold. Lorena loves texture and the tactile quality of an original artwork. She primarily paints with a palette knife, but sometimes combines with large brush strokes to build up layers to create colorful harmony, depth and movement.

Originally from Montana, Lorena studied Art & Design from the University of Montana as well as Graphic Design at NC State’s College of Design.

Studio visits available by appointment, located 15 minutes north of Boulder. Visit lorenafox.com or follow @lorenafox.art on social media for a behind-the-scenes look into her art.

I am intrigued by the human condition and inspired by the ability of one to not only recover from unspeakable life challenges; but emerge resilient. My former career as a play therapist, sensitized me to these complex processes, and has inspired my pieces. My metaphorical human and anthropomorphic animal figures reflect my life experiences and observations. Whether a piece disturbs or delights, my hope is to engage and elicit an emotional response. Every sculpture is a unique, one-of-a-kind, story teller. I live and work on a small farm in rural Boulder County, where I am grateful to live in such an inspiring environment.
