Michael Deragisch

All of us are born as artists, most of us a simply distracted from the process by pressures of modern societal expectations. Beginning high school in the turbulent times of the late 60’s early 70’s I had no idea where I fit.  I wasn’t a true anti-establishment rebel, and while I was on the ski team, I wasn’t really an athlete either.  Though earning pretty good grades, I wasn’t a scholar either.  I did feel comfortable in the Art room.  Fortunately, two of the Art-teachers, Mr. Christopherson & Mr. Erie were kind, helpful and saw potential in everyone.  However, the pen, pencil or brush in my hand simply did not do what my mind’s eye wanted it to.  Mr. Erie had me do some research on Calder, and helped me build a few simple mobiles…  I was hooked!

Off to College as an Art Major.  There I found no teachers willing to work with my limited talent, and was asked to consider another path.  Communications worked, and I went on to study and later work in this field.

Still, in limited spare time I would build a simple mobile now and again, but life, several moves and lack of careful storage found the mobiles and the desire itself to be packed up, crushed and lost.

Years later, after retiring from a career at the University, I found myself now living alone in a home with high ceilings and I decided the space needed a mobile.  After a few attempts and prototypes to relearn the art of balance I hung one in 2016…And less than a year later I charged ahead with what is today Colorado Kinetic Arts.

Focusing on Kinetic Art for indoors I continue to explore different materials.  Wood, acrylic and foam board all have their advantages. Currently I am experimenting with metal, and branching out to sculptures for outdoors.

Graphic, kinetic, layered …. this is what makes up my basic style. I do what are considered paintings, but they could also be thought of as flat sculptures in that they have depth, painted sides and a finish unlike most paintings. The evolution has been in complexity. More layering which creates a greater sense of depth. A more balanced image that integrates the various components into a unified piece.

My process and images are a part of a long exploration of shapes, textures, and color that involves sanding away much of the paint. Multiple color coats are repeatedly removed, giving the impression of a work that has aged and of colors long buried.

After a layer of paint is applied and sanded, a coat of clear is applied which both protects the paint and adds depth to the layers. I can now paint over areas that donʼt work and save areas that do ……. and so it goes with the process being repeated as many times as necessary.

The panels, which I build by hand, have depth, extending the painting surface and allowing the image to continue around the sides. These panels have a certain heft, reminiscent of a slab of stone or a solid block of wood.

The pattern of marks that I use could be considered old – could be modern….. typical tribal design with an element of street graffiti. And, the smooth surface begs to be touched, which I encourage.

This combination comes together into a piece that invites study, to be viewed in different light, revealing details to be discovered over time.

Like a lot of artists, working on developing a consistent style is always the goal and a challenge. I want to keep a recognizable look from one piece to the next and wrap it together with a type of execution and craftsmanship that I find engaging….. and hopefully others will as well.
