Emerald Public Art: Beacon of Industry & Art

Beacon: a light or other visible object serving as a signal, or guide.

The “Beacon of Industry and Art” project is conceived as a tribute to the industrious and creative energy that defines Emerald City. This public art installation is designed to resonate with the community and tradespeople who have occupied these studio spaces over the years. We wanted to acknowledge their contributions while creating a visual narrative that honors both the industrial heritage and the artistic vibrancy of North Boulder.

The design concept behind this project integrates elements that reflect the materials and tools of trade—such as mechanical parts, raw materials, coils, architectural forms, and textures reminiscent of industrial surfaces. Through an artful composition of patterns, shapes, and colors, the graphics evoke the dynamic identity of Emerald City. This is achieved by blending abstract representations with existing yet simplified forms, creating a dialogue between artistic expression and industrial functionality.

We aimed to responsibly reuse as much of the existing structural elements as possible. By re-purposing light boxes from the existing sign, we reduced waste and contributed to a more environmentally-conscious project. This approach also creates a tangible link between the old and new, respecting the past while celebrating the art community that makes up North Boulder.

Our design philosophy emphasizes openness and visual transparency. We opened up spaces and used materials that allow light to permeate, creating a sense of flow. This not only improves the visual appeal but also fosters a welcoming beacon that invites delight, and joy.
Understanding the importance of visibility and identity for tenants, we allowed for dedicated signage space. The signage is seamlessly integrated into the overall design, ensuring that it complements the artwork while providing clear, effective communication for businesses
and residents.

Our design also serves as a beacon that pays homage to the North Boulder arts community. We incorporated artistic elements that reflect the local culture and heritage, to pay respect and celebrate the area’s creative legacy. At the same time, the work maintains a balance that provides a basic identity for the space, making it a landmark that resonates with both the arts and industry.

This project was made possible by a partnership and grant from the Ghadimi Group. Thank you to Emerald Properties for the site management and support during installation. Special thanks to the collaborators who supported Derek and Alexa’s team: Jackson Ellis (welding), Keith Florine (fabrication), and Photo Craft Imaging (large format print production). And finally, thank you to the artists for their vision and diligence throughout the process.
